Arthur H. Rubenstein, MBBCh Chair of Cell and Developmental Biology
University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine
M. Celeste Simon, Ph.D. is an investigator of the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute (AFCRI) and Arthur H. Rubenstein, MBBCh Chair of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. She served as the AFCRI Scientific Director for 18 years (2007–2025) and was an Associate Director of the Abramson Cancer Center 2017–2025.
Dr. Simon's research focuses on how cells sense and respond to changes in the availability of molecular oxygen and nutrients — affecting normal development, physiology, and diseases such as solid tumor growth. The Simon Laboratory studies how O₂ sensing impacts tumor inflammation, metabolism, metastasis, and overall disease progression.
She employs both animal models and cancer patient samples with the ultimate goal of developing novel strategies to treat tumors such as pancreatic cancer, soft tissue sarcoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, and renal cancer.
